The final leg of the world's longest, most inclusive relay

At every Commonwealth Games since Cardiff, Wales, in 1958, Her Majesty’s ‘message to the athletes’ has been carried from Buckingham Palace to the opening ceremony in a purpose-built baton.

The Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton has already begun its epic journey to the Games. The world’s longest, most inclusive relay commenced on 14 March 2005 when Her Majesty The Queen placed Her ‘message to the athletes’ in the Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton. She then entrusted it to the first relay runners – Australian cultural icons Elle Macpherson and Catherine Freeman.

The relay concludes one year and one day later, as the final relay runner enters the Melbourne Cricket Ground during the opening ceremony of the Melbourne 2006 XVIII Commonwealth Games on 15 March 2006.

The Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton is travelling more than 180 000 kilometres across land, air and sea, via many thousands of relay runners and on many different modes of transport – from bicycle and wheelchair to hot air balloon, steam train and even on elephant and horse back.

The Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton Relay is taking the Queen’s Baton to all 71 nations of the Commonwealth – home to one third of the world’s population. This is a world first: no games relay has ever visited all member nations. This makes the Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton Relay the most inclusive games relay ever.

The Queen’s Baton arrives at its 71st Commonwealth nation and final destination, Australia, on 24 January 2006. It will travel to every state, territory and every capital city in Australia in the 50 day countdown to the games.

The baton will commence its 21,500 kilometre journey around Australia in Sydney, where it will spend two days travelling through the city and suburbs and visit many of Sydney’s popular Australia Day celebrations.

From Byron Bay on the east coast, to Margaret River in the west, from Darwin in the north to Hobart in the south, the Australian leg of the world’s longest, most inclusive relay unites more than 500 Australian communities in celebration of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.

With thousands of people watching from the roadside and millions more watching across the world on the internet, the baton will be carried across Australia by 3500 relay runners and on various alternate modes of transport, including boats across Sydney Harbour, Bass Strait and through the Whitsunday Islands, and The Ghan from Alice Springs to Darwin.

More than 500 Australian communities unite in celebration of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games

The Melbourne 2006 Queen’s Baton will travel to all states, territories and all capital cities of Australia in the 50 days from Wednesday 25 January 2006 to Wednesday 15 March 2006. Local events and other community festivities will be held in more than 500 communities en route. Full details of the relay, including street-level route maps, and community celebrations planned for these areas will be announced by local governments six to eight weeks prior to the baton’s arrival in each community.

The location of an evening ceremony is marked with (E), which can also be found on the Australian Route calendar.
